Some students in southwest Atlanta got a lesson in technology Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008 and they were rewarded with taking home their very own computers. |
Students at Kipp West Atlanta Young Scholars Academy didn't mind being at school Saturday, because the lesson they received didn't end with homework, but a new computer.
The group behind the effort called, Take I.T. Home is Computers for Youth. The organization gathers unwanted laptops and desktop computers from corporate America and individual donors. The group installs academic software and provides hands-on instruction for the students and their parents at urban schools across the country.
Saturday's lesson was a long-awaited one. The students in southwest Atlanta were supposed to get their computers last spring, but thieves stole 150 computers from the organization in May. Computers for Youth appealed to several companies for help. SAP donated 150 laptops.
The eight graders said they were grateful for the chance to excel.
